Do you recognize this theme?
I just wondered if you thought the average user can distinguish the two themes being related with one another.

I tried to make the theme as unique as possible from the original, eliminating any possible resemblance between the two. If you could provide your two cents, that'll help me out. Suggestions on improving the design would help me out as well.

The only thing that looks remotely similar is the left navigation menu(s), but other than that, the two templates are in no way identical (or close to it, for that matter)!

Without reading the text, I'd say that they're two completley different sites.
Edit: On a closer look, they are. But I see no resemblance.

Very little resemblance here...and remember...all of these opinions are coming from webmasters and designers who know what to look for...If we say there is little resemblance then your average user will never notice. Good job
