Offering multiple themes

In my forum, red is a primary color in my theme. It goes with the rest of the site design. I have a few people complaining that the red is making their eyes bleed and make them want to kill themselves .

The majority of the people like it though. I've been creating websites in general long enough to know that you can't please everyone and it's hard enough to get 4 people to agree on something much less 100 or more!

I could easily modify my theme to tone down the red and offer a 2nd theme. I see that AF does that here. Is this something commonly done? Also, when people sign up I would like them to have the default RED..can a preference be set in the user control panel somehow? I'm new to vB so I don't know if say "Joe" comes to the forum and chooses the "grey" theme, will it stay the grey theme everytime he comes back to visit or is this a setting that i would need to create in vB. I tried searching google but apparently my search terms sucked.

My own site has 4 totally different styles, there is usually one they like. I would hate to visit a site which only has one skin. Especially if its one in colors I dislike.

Ok, so it seems like it's a good idea to offer another, do you know how the technicalities work? If someone chooses a theme, will the forum remember their selection or is that something they set as their preference in the usercp?

Thanks!

In mine, the drop-down appears in every page.. SO, when a user selects a different color, it is remembered.

If they dislike the red, tone it down a bit. Look at some templates with red in there and try to see why they look nice and function. I never make 2 themes for a forum. My layouts are mostly unique and branded for that forum. I would rather establish a brand than have 10 stock themes. And it looks like my folks have nothing to do with the fact I don't offer them more themes ...

The only thing is I have the red in the rest of the site so it's establishing a brand as it's own. they dont mind the red in the header, its the red in the threads (in the table headings) so I may change those to grey and see how everything looks. I don't mind offering an additional theme if it sticks to the branding.

Nobody seems to be answering your question

Yes, if a user selects a skin that is not the default one, this option will be saved every time they come back...This must be a logged in member though (won't work for guests)

We offer 2 skins here at AF for that very reason...many people felt that the red (which was the original once upon a time) was too "blinding", however, there are a lot of people who like the red one and have been using it for quite some time now.

I don't have a second theme because the one I have I like and have heard no complaints about. That said, if it were simple I might entertain a second with subtle changes in color (but same layout, graphics, etc) to retain branding while supporting choice. If you have that option early on probably worth doing.

Just wanted to note that :

is the most disturbing smilie I have ever seen.
