Using default skins

Do you think using the default skin of your specific forum software is a big no-no?

I usually have a terrible itch to change it just because I know it is the default and it bothers ME, even if no one else cares. Unless it's a webmaster forum or a forum that attracts the extremely web-savvy, it would seem that the guests aren't going to have an issue with it and, in many cases, wouldn't know the difference.

What are your thoughts?

Nah, for me it is SMF, all the way. Unless, of course, I can spring for the vB license.

I also feel the itch to change the default skin instantly. I think it makes your forum more unique, even if it not a custom skin.

The first response to this thread stated something about the default skin of phpBB so I was clarifying that, for me (the thread starter who posed the question), the default skin in question would be the SMF one.

I think using default skins is a no-no. The only time I would ever use a default skin is if I had an existing website that the skin matched and I modified it a little to fit in to the site.

I think the default skin is a no-no as well...if you have a non-tech savvy forum, odds are, most people will not notice and could care less about the design....but why take the risk? It's so easy to install new skins these days, so why not put a new one up there?

Yes and no. I have a forum that has the default skin, the colors have been change and some of the icons and buttons also. But my members don't care. They want something that is easy to read and easy to use. I currently have no competition so I don't need to "stand-out". Skins or no skins will not be my deciding factor on joining a forum.
