Everyone uses Photoshop, however I have produced my best work using InkScape. It is a free download and it very good for this kind of stuff. I just think that Photoshop has too much, and is greatly complicated as compared to InkScape. The only problem is that InkScape only saves into PNG format, so I export it as .png and then open it in Photoshop and save it as a GIF. No quality is lost but the file size decreases, which is better for loading pages.

I very rarely use Photoshop myself, though I sometimes use the 'Image ready' plugin and Illlustrator. Other than that I have largely forgone the use of Adobe in favour of Macromedia: Fireworks8, Flash8 etc.

I am not familiar with InkScape. I'll have to take a look.

Yeah take a good look at it, you will really like it once you get to know how to use the tools.
