.ico file making

I'm looking for a program that I can use to make .ico files, I've found a few of them on download.com but not too many that really sound good.

I'm looking to help my users have some cool stuff they can download from my site for custimizing their computers.

I'm looking for one that will allow for 256x256 size images and support clear backgrounds and so on. hoping for a free one, if you have a link or know were i should look please help me out.

I've always renamed my .gif , .png etc.. files to .ico.
You just create an image file and either rename it to .ico or open it with Ms Paint and save as filename.ico.

Hopefully this'll work.

I tried both those sugestions and neither are good. Changing the filename extension to .ico doesn't work. paint doesn't allow for saving as .ico either. I tried using irfanview and that results some very chopy looking icons. photoshop doens't seem to allow you to save as a .ico either.

when you simply change the file names extension to .ico and try to get windows XP to recognize it as a valid file it gives an error message and says the file is no good.

well sounds great but I can't access their site unless I download firefox according to the message I was given on their site. Seems a bit rediculous to not make a site backwords compatable.

Could you possibly link me the download location so i can give it a go?

You do it directly from the home page. It generates the file for you, you simply upload the image you want it to use.

Firefox is better anyways so you should just make the switch.

I personally can't stand firefox, it's just not my style.

I did just download a program from download.com called "Icon Suchi". It's doing an OK job, but I still could use a better program.

favicons are a different story than just Icons, these are for the desktop. I'm working to give my members some cool stuff relating to my site to use for their desktop.

create a little more site devotion so to speak, I don't expect many to use them but I'm sure a few of them will. I have some really devoted people that are all about the site.
