I'm actually reconsidering removing ours all together
Brent has a good point, users that come to my site should know what it is about. I'm missing out on a good advertising spot via adsense or a forum contest or some other promotion.

its not really a welcome message per se. Like what i feel is the most effective is where you explain what your forum is about and who it is for. I think the thing that caught me the most about bdudes, was it explained what the forum was about, tips and tricks for blogging, and who it was for, beginers to experts etc. I am no blog expert and i actually wanted to see what the site was about. i felt a lot more at ease about venturing into the forum after i read that it was a place for beginners etc. It may be a small thing, but i think that it can have an impact on your bounce rate
