Simple or Complex?

When choosing your forum's theme, do you prefer to go for a minimal design? Or a more complex design that uses more images and is heavier on the system?

Depends on the site's topic for me. Some I don't think users would care about design and might go minimalistic, or others I want to look really flashy with lots of css images. Instead of basing this on personal preference, it's probably best to think of what suits your users best.

I prefer abstract designs... I like to use use layers ans make a complex header and make the site use elements of that header so it's all connected. People read left to right, top to bottom so I always make sure to have something bright in the upper right hand corner so your eyes focus on the middle part where the logo usually resides.

Simple gets my vote, yet a few toys to make it unique and memorable

you gotta make sure you have something besides the content that makes you stick out though.... There are prolly 50 forums dedicated to pokemon or starwars or whatever... the best ones usually have something really creative that the others dont.

I agree with Brandon 100%. You can easily fool many people with a clean professional design that mixes in a few fantastic graphics or elements that make it special.

jschneier will become famous soon enough
Clean, simple designs often look classy and intelligent. (think Mac not Yahoo)

I think simple with a fantastic logo is best (and by fantastic I don't mean complex.)
