Title: Dave's not here... Join Date: Dec 2005 Posts: 418 ![]() | When I first started I didn't know much, but I quickly learned by asking questions on the SMF support forum. Reading PHP and CSS is pretty easy for me now, but writing it is another story... The way I've gotten by so far is a mixture of trial and error and asking people who know. Though if you are really interested in learning the languages and getting rid of those headaches once and for all, check out http://www.w3schools.com/. They have by far the best tutorials for any web language.

I can insert HTML into PHP and install mods without too much trouble. I am having a bear of a time installing a portal on one of my SMF boards and don't even know what to ask support to get to the bottom of the problem I'm having.

My suggestion is to not let it get to you! If you would like to be able to modify your forums yourself, you can do it with a little patience and motivation. It's like learning a new language, sure, but anybody can do it. If modifying your forums isn't that a big deal to you - that's fine too...just don't worry about it and get others to help you out for the things that are absolutely crucial. And most important of all, if you ever have specific questions, ask us here at AF! Somebody is bound to know the answer to your question.

But the more you read the better you get. I have learn lots from Ryan and the guys (and gals). When I do mods from VB.org or .com I read it and read it again. Best of all it feels good when you get it to work right. Biggest advice: Don't do mods when you are tired! Ever!
