Not very techy...

Any other admins not really techy? I appreciate how innovative code is... but I have not a clue what I am doing when I try to add things. If a template has to be modified I don't even attempt it. I'm getting a bit frustrated and it gets embarassing to have errors show up for the board to see.

Non geeks........how do you get mods installed?

When I first started I didn't know much, but I quickly learned by asking questions on the SMF support forum. Reading PHP and CSS is pretty easy for me now, but writing it is another story...

The way I've gotten by so far is a mixture of trial and error and asking people who know.

Though if you are really interested in learning the languages and getting rid of those headaches once and for all, check out http://www.w3schools.com/. They have by far the best tutorials for any web language.

hahaha well i guess i cant anwser this because i dont have trouble installing the mods! so i guess you can call me a geek (geeks = good, nerd = bad)

but there are people who install mods on forum (i wonder if there is a place for installing mods on forums ... if there inst that wouldnt be that bad of an idea for like 1$ a mod... hmm...) anywho ive seen in signitures on other forums saying if you need a mod installed pm me and i will install it for 1 buck and all. so thats a way

and i have also seen on ipbhelpers.com they have a form that you can submit a mod install request and they will install it for free i think but im not really sure!

or... you could follow those directions you get what are really simple to understand unless the guy who wrote them was a compleate idiot (some are so annoying at least on phpbb mods they dont make anysense )

AF should start a thing for mod requests or something that would be cool (not that i would want a mod installed but i would install ones for other people but you would have to give your ftp so i think that AF would really have to know the person before letting them maybe like only advisors )

ok enough yackin...

I can limp through quite a bit of stuff as long as it doesn't require actually writing PHP. I can insert HTML into PHP and install mods without too much trouble.

I am having a bear of a time installing a portal on one of my SMF boards and don't even know what to ask support to get to the bottom of the problem I'm having.

I do my own installations, modificiations, etc. Though I know many non-techy admins who hire a special admin to do it for them.

I'm not exactly in the position to hire, at the moment, but I can always come up with creative barters. LOL!

5 years ago I didn't know the difference between a thread and a post...Everything I've learned since then has been on my own accord...trial and error basically (lots of error, eh Larry? )

I'm still learning...I learn something new every day, but the good thing is that I get to use my knowledge over and over all the time. My suggestion is to not let it get to you! If you would like to be able to modify your forums yourself, you can do it with a little patience and motivation. It's like learning a new language, sure, but anybody can do it. If modifying your forums isn't that a big deal to you - that's fine too...just don't worry about it and get others to help you out for the things that are absolutely crucial.

And most important of all, if you ever have specific questions, ask us here at AF! Somebody is bound to know the answer to your question.

I am also still learning. But the more you read the better you get. I have learn lots from Ryan and the guys (and gals). When I do mods from VB.org or .com I read it and read it again. Best of all it feels good when you get it to work right.

Biggest advice: Don't do mods when you are tired! Ever!

and even bigger - Always backup everything before you touch it, ALWAYS! All forum admins will make a mistake modifying at some point in time, the important thing to remember is to always have a working copy of everything before modifying anything.
