Using Flash Animation

Join Date: Feb 2006 Posts: 108 Location: California  | Using Flash Animation How do you all feel about using flash in certain areas of your forum? I am not talking an entire page but maybe some supporting elements here and there. I was thinking about incorporating some flash on my dog forum in the area right of my featured images. I use this area to give short messages and spotlight members of the month. Is there a reason why forums don't use Flash, has it proven to not give results, or is it an SEO issue. I might experiment with it and see how it goes.

Join Date: Sep 2005 Posts: 10,246 Location: Athens, GA   | I used to co-admin a forum that had a flash header...I thought it was cool...I don't really know the technicalities behind it such as whether or not it harms SE rankings or is a burden on the server and load, but we never ran into any problems with it  I'll let somebody who is more qualified to come in behind me here

| We'll be releasing our new layout soon and it has a flash menu. I think it adds a bit of professionalism and it makes it generally look better. Some sites that have the whole site in flash can be a bit annoying but some nice banners and menu bars I think make the site look a whole lot better. | ||||

Join Date: Sep 2005 Posts: 100 | If you use flash ensure that you have an escape route for user without flash installed. 1 very important question must be solved, "What does the page look like for a user without flash?" Flash menus are an accesibility nightmare, if you must use flash menu be sure and duplicate the links somewhere using text so spiders and no-flash users can still navigate. Flash is nice and fun but it really must be used with discretion. | ||||

| cool thread! i have used a flash banner in one of our skins. its nice but ATM i did it i didnt know how to add it as a banner, so i made it in flash then converted it to a animated gif, that worked well. on our site, at the bottom left "skin chooser" the "underwater" skin has a flash made/gif converted banner | |
