Page rank is basically a link analysis of content from your site along with links to and from your site pertaining to any content. In other words the more hits you get from another site to either your front page or specific topics will help to increase your PR. The more sites that link to your front page or a specific topic the better. It doesn't even have to be reciprocal links. So it's not necessarily link exchanges but interest in something that is on your site that helps in this. How do I increase my PR? You can do this in a few ways. 1. If you do link exchanges with other sites make sure they haven't been banned by google or other major search engines. You can easily search google for those sites and see what it takes to pull them up. If you have to type in the entire URL to that site to pull them up then they would not be a good site to trade links with. You can also check out the sites PR by checking here. That site will also help you to see any faults with your site. 2. If you have a front page or blog, update it often. Now this will differ on who you talk to but I suggest at least once a week or more. If you don't have a front page that's not a problem though it does limit your site. If this is the case try to keep new topics started daily and keep the site active. This will go back to how to get hits to "my site". It's all a balanced system, the more search engine hits you get the more traffic you will get. 3. If your site is random and not really themed about any one thing then you don't have a chance. The way PR is calculated means that it looks at a sites content and the way it's layed out aswell as what sites link to you and what sites you link to. So if your site covers everything from football to flower beds and you link to sites that talk about cars and cats then you haven't focused enough to warrant a PR ranking. Keep your site based on a theme and the search engines will show you they like you. What does my PR versus hits mean? PR is what helps your site pull up near the top of a search when someone is looking for something using google. Hits only refer to how many people have visited your site today, this week, etc. PR is not based on how many hits you get but how often something on your site turns up somewhere else whether it be another search engine or someone elses site. This does not mean that you should oopen up your directory to everyone, but you should allow, given that you have the bandwidth, some amount of hotlinking or linking to your site, even in a post on a forum, to whatever someone thought was worthy of it. Why should I care what my PR is? If you ask this then you shouldn't care. Let's say your site is mainly for family and friends to post on, keep it that way. But there are many sites that are still small but want to be big and this means something to them. PR is worth as much as hits if not more. The higher your PR the better chance you have of getting random search engines turning up your site when someone is looking for something. The more uniques you get like this the more attractive your site is to other potential link exchanges with other sites. I just started this site and want to be big, what do I do? With the billions of sites out there this is very hard to do. The main thing you should do is focus your site on one area, say technology or celebrities. Make sure you update atleast one area of your site regularly. If you have no front page then post a new topic in your forum daily. If you have a front page update it weekly or more often. The more the better. If you don't have the time to do it ask a friend. As you grow your site make sure to branch out to other sites and make friends with the owners and once your in with them then they may help you out. Find other webmaster only sites that pertain to the area your site is geared towards and post regularly and someone will notice you and want to trade links with you or help you get bigger. Can I buy into a higher PR ranking? Yes and no. You can purchase high ranked areas through search engines to put your site at the top but many of the major search engine companies frown on this and will actually devalue your PR even though your at the top of a search engine. Or you could purchase a link on another high ranking site. This will get you a ton of traffic nd if you keep purchasing these links will inevitably help you though both are expensive routes to go. | ||||

I have seen sites that have a page rank of 7 and they are super lame- meaning they have about 2 backlinks. And the exact opposite, a site that is page rank 3 or 4 but number one on the search results and have thousands of links to the site. Anna23@natureday.com
