If the page they are hitting is a 404 then it should be a static HTML file, which means about .000000000001 processing time and memory usage. This is what webservers do. They receive request, validate file existence if it does not exist, look for 404 file, if there is a 404 file and it is static dump the html to the stream. Done. There is no extraneous processing at all. In fact your web server would probably be happier about serving a tiny 404 file than serving your hefty ass forums. Unless you are getting 4-5000 hits per second on a static file you will not see a performance hit.

Exactly. Basically you are telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about. You are trying to make a case for taking over a persons website and possibly stealing visitors. That is a case that you will never win with me. You are so concerned with resources, but yet you would rather take over a persons website and redirect them to your forums, which is by far a more intensive task then just showing a blank file. For all intents what you are doing is illegal.

So people shouldnt stop others from hotlinking? Do you allow other sites to hot link to your files?

Hotlinking is completely different...when somebody hotlinks your images, they do so without your permission...In your situation, somebody used a service that you were offering...You can't just flip a switch and steal their traffic after the fact.

They are hotlinking to a 404 page. Is your 404 page that special?
