A quick trip to Wikipedia:

Quote:
Virtual hosting is a method that servers such as web servers use to host more than one domain name on the same computer, sometimes on the same IP address.

Virtual web hosting is one of the most popular hosting options available at the moment - probably because it is one of the most cost effective options on the market. Also known as shared hosting, virtual hosting allows a website owner to have a site hosted on a web server that is shared with other websites. In simple terms, the virtual hosting company's server will allocate out hosting services and bandwidth to more than one website. Virtual web hosting is a cheaper hosting option because you won't have to pay for a dedicated server to host just your website.

Virtual web hosting is a good solution for small- to medium-sized (and even some larger) websites that aren't constantly being visited or that have reasonable bandwidth needs.

There are two basic methods of accomplishing virtual hosting: name-based, and IP address or ip-based.
You may have heard of shared hosting, it is the same.

What about for large websites? Shouldn't they get their own dedicated server?

Depends.. some websites require several servers ... it all depends on how big your site really is..

If you have a big site, do YOU HAVE TO move to a dedicated server?

Honestly, it would depend on the definition of "big site."

If you're website is chiseling away at 100-200GB's of data transfer per month then I would certainly look into moving away from shared hosting as you're not going to find too many shared hosting providers that will allow you to continually use that much data transfer on a monthly basis without suspending the account for intense resource usage.

If you're website is only using 1GB to 50GB's of data transfer per month, then no, you really don't need anything more than shared/virtual hosting or at most, a VPS (Virtual Private Server).

Again, it really boils down to what your definition of "big site" is as to what service you do or will need.
