Non-www and www Version Not The Same?

Well, I was asked by our official city website webmaster to make a forum for the site since he has not much time and/or knowledge with "foruming". It turned out OK. We've installed the forum and all, no problem about that.

The problem came with the domain. We used a subdomain for www.vigancity.gov.ph for the forum (forum.vigancity.gov.ph). But the problem is, the panel we are using (Plesk) is way different with cPanel. It's too much confusing. (I have no access to the panel). See, when we try to browse forum.vigancity.gov.ph with www in it, it won't work. (www.forum.vigancity.gov.ph).

A friend told me, that's because they're different. But with my site (using cPanel), it's OK, so what might be the problem? And one thing more, forum.vigancity.gov.ph is different from vigancity.gov.ph/forum. Pretty weird. Any of you guys can help me with this?

P.S. I am not trying to advertise the site. You wouldn't be interested anyway. LOL!

Yes as I've mentioned above, a friend told me that and as I've mentioned above, my subdomain works even if you put a www like http://www.forums.soulstalk.com/ for instance, so I was just wondering why.

To create second level subdomains like www.corvettes.mychevycars.com ("www" is the second level subdomain and "corvettes" is the first level subdomain in this example) then you would do one of the following:

1. If you have made an /htdocs/corvettes directory so that you have http://corvettes.mychevycars.com then you can make http://www.corvettes.mychevycars.com by getting a shell prompt and creating a symlink like so:

cd /htdocs
ln -s corvettes www.corvettes

Now http://www.corvettes.mychevycars.com will lead to the same place as http://corvettes.mychevycars.com and all the files for both of these URLs are uploaded in the /htdocs/corvettes directory.

2. Alternatively, you may want your second level subdomain to lead to a separate area of your website instead of being symlinked together with the first level subdomain. For example you may want http://splitbumper.corvettes.mychevycars.com (where "splitbumper" is the second level subdomain) to lead to a section of your website dedicated to 1963-1965 Corvettes with split bumpers, and have http://corvettes.mychevycars.com just lead to a different section of your site about Corvettes in general. To setup the second level subdomain this way, you would make a separate directory altogether for it, like this:

cd /htdocs
mkdir splitbumper.corvettes

The "splitbumper.corvettes" subdirectory is created right alongside all the other subdomain subdirectories, including the "corvettes" subdirectory, if you made one. Then you upload files related to splitbumpers into the /htdocs/splitbumper.corvettes subdirectory, and view them in a browser at http://splitbumper.corvettes.mychevycars.com

EDIT: you guys are quick

Subdomains can work with or without www ...assuming they are set up to do so...Unfortunately I'm of little help, Soul...I don't know anything about Plesk and whether or not this would be the cause of the problem...Check .htaccess for anything fishy.

Cool thanks. I'll tell that to the webmaster since I don't have access on the panel and all. Maybe I'll get his trust first.

EDIT: LOL! Poor Ryan.
