| Title: Apprentice Join Date: Oct 2005 Posts: 469 Location: California ![]() | Transfer Domain? I currently have domain on GoDaddy which will expire in a few days. However, I want to switch to NameCheap, how should I handle that? Should I just wait until the time runs out for GoDaddy, and then purchase it at NameCheap? Thank you very much.

GoDaddy may have bought it for more than one year, remember your only technically hiring it from them. Also to transfer it to namecheap you have to get what is called a EPP code from GoDaddy now to transfer it. Quote:

This period generally lasts 30-60 days. If the domain is not renewed, the domain is then placed back up for registration. If the domain is in the redemption period, you will not be able to transfer it over to NameCheap until you renew the domain and then have an EPP code issued for the transfer. In addition, you may have to pay transfer fees to transfer the domain from GoDaddy to NameCheap. I believe there is another period after the redemption period, however, I am not 100% sure right off hand as of right now. You could easily search on Google to find out more about these periods of time and so forth. I also know there are some registrars that will not allow you to transfer the domain XX amount of days before it expires, so if GoDaddy is one of those, you'll have to renew it with them anyway before you will be able to transfer it over to NameCheap. | ||||
