Question How many of you are on a Dedicated or VPS server

Today my host tells me I can no longer be on a shared server.

My site only close to 4000 members but as of late traffic has really been picking up. But I can't justify a dedicated server. Maybe a VPS?

I'm just curious what you guys suggest. How many of you are on dedicated plans.

Here is the message I got;

Quote:
============== Message: ==============
Hi,

Your account is utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant
degradation of services on the server. This is a shared environment and we
can not allow one user to utilize the majority of the resources on a server
as it affects all users adversely. Because of this, you have been temporarily
moved to the Quantz server. A detail of the problem is shown below:

CPU: 1.45 %
Memory: 0.67 %
Mysql: 2.1%

trumpetmaster.com 1.45 0.67 2.1
Top Process %CPU 11.0 /usr/bin/php
Top Process %CPU 9.0 /usr/bin/php
Top Process %CPU 0.3 /usr/bin/php

The peak CPU usage at 19% caused by scripts on your site caused the server
to be unstable. Since relocating your site, the server has stabilized.

We moved you to Quantz first to solve the issue of the degraded service on
the server and second as a courtesy in order to prevent any downtime on your
site to allow you time to rectify the situation. Currently, your site is not
suitable for a shared hosting environment.

Quantz is not a production server and is not guaranteed to run in the same
manner as your old server nor will it support all functions you may have.
This is a transitional server only and is not intended to be a permanent
placement. Please make a decision on how you would like to proceed within
seven (7) days. After seven (7) days, your account will be suspended if no
other arrangements are made.

You have the following options:

1. You may upgrade your package to our Dedicated hosting plan. For more
information on the features and pricing, please see
http://www.lunarpages.com/plan3.php

2. You may take steps to correct the problem. This must be done before the
seven (7) days are up. You will need to let the technician know the steps you
took to correct the issue and get approval before being returned to a
production server.

Please note that the above mentioned resource usage is due to PHP processing.
Since we do not have the exact scripts to provide (since the manner in which
PHP scripts are provided on the server only shows the username and not the
script name causing the high usage), you would need to review your account
for
scripts that may be the cause. Please check ones such as forums, blogs,
content management systems, and galleries as these are especially likely to
create high usage.

3. You may look for a dedicated server or other hosting solution. Please
remember that propagation takes up to seventy two (72) hours so if you decide
on changing hosts you should allow enough time for propagation.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. We value you as a customer and
want to work with you toward a solution that is mutually beneficial. Please
let us know as quickly as possible how you would like to proceed.

That's LunarPages for you...I've heard some bad reviews of them in the past.

Are the forums the only thing that you offer on your website? If so, looking at your currently active users and posts over the last 24 hours, there's no way you need a VPS or dedicated server yet.

What do you have your "Active Users" set at?

You don't get nearly the activity that AF does, yet you have twice as many active users

Maybe there's something I'm missing...maybe your forums receive more traffic than it appears.

There has been hardly any traffic or posts the past 3 days because no one has waited 1 minute + to access the site. We are up and running on a temporary server right now. Things are fine. But I think it will take a while to get everyone back. Edit: I should mention we are running forums, classifieds, flash caht (hardly ever used) and thats about it

Ok, well if you are receiving the traffic that your Active Users suggests that you are, then you should probably start thinking about a VPS or dedicated server...actually, you have already started thinking about it, heh.

Don't be too harsh, at least they didn't just suspend his site - they put him in a sandbox area rather than leaving him, and his users, out in the cold.

Well, they did actually leave him out in the cold...for 3 days while his site was ultimately inaccessible...not only that, but they placed the blame on his ISP when people worldwide cannot access his website and when multiple customers in the LP forums are complaining of the same exact problem....Having a poor server is one thing, but denying it and placing the blame on your customer is another.

I have multiple dedicated boxes right now. I would defintily move to a VPS or dedicated box if I were in your shoes. Speed of your site is so critical IMO.

I think we will go with asmallorange. A VPS there comes with a cpanel $50 / month and if I do a year it will be 2 months free.

The "Personal" plan comes with

256MB memory
150GB Bandwidth
10GB storage

http://www.asmallorange.com/services/vps/

Do you guys think thats enough to power my site? How can I figure out how much memory I would need. Any suggestions?
