Dedicated servers

I was looking at http://www.softlayer.com and it is set out way better than most sites i have visited but choosing a server really scares me as i have had no experience what so ever with dedicated servers. Are they as hard as they look? I am curently with www.servage.net and tbh its good but not really my cup of tea i don't really like the way i am feel restricted with what i can do even though it has the same features as cpanel it just makes it harder. So i am looking into getting a dedicated server.

If i got one would it only be able to host one site or can it host multiple sites?

Also are they really hard to manage?

a Dedicated server could host dozens of smaller sites, or 2-3 larger ones. From what i am told anyway.

Well if you had a dedicated server then you would need to know how to run it also they can host quite a lot of sites, depending on the site of the sites.

Well, depends on if you get a Linux, or Windows server. I would personally reccomend Linux, They are alot more stable, and usually cheaper. If its a company who do not look after the server for you, you will need to know basic Linux commands, and SSH commands for a Linux server. Windows, i have no idea as i have never even dreamed of using such OS for a server.

Well if you are running a small site & you do not know how to run one then you should just use shared hosting as dedicated hosting costs loads more and it's not easy to run, unless you know how to run one.

Yes i had Linux in mind And why would i need to do all these commands as apposed to just putting my site on there and using it a bit like shared hosting with cpanel?

Well you would need to get a Managed one if you want to just run it using cpanel.

As otherwise you would have to install the operating system and control it using the SSH commands.

Dedicated servers have somewhat of a learning curve, but they really aren't that hard to manage. Sure, there are day-to-day tasks and checks that must be performed, and yes, you may be faced with problems every now and then. Those are the little quirks of running a dedicated server, and you are going to have to face them at some point.
