I've had the same problem on my new forums - its a real PITA and my host keeps telling me there is no issue. I've noticed, however, that when it happens, the load on the server is higher than it should be. Have you asked your host if they're having issues? Not that they'll admit it - but it could answer your question

The server probably isn't "down" when this happens, it's probably just the load, and it is only temporary...I doubt there's any way for the host to go back and see what happened or what caused it. My advice would be not to worry about it unless it became a noticeable problem or lots of people started complaining...Then, your best bet is to contact your host AS SOON AS the server starts acting up...They probably aren't going be able to fix the problem unless they see it as it happens. So, you've just got to hope that your host is quick with support tickets (or even better, live chat/phone support).

If you're host isn't a reseller (not saying they are, but many are these days), then ask them to search for a load monitoring script. They'll need root access to do the installation. Generally, you can find a script to monitor load, timestamp the load and when it peaked and then e-mail the data to the server administrator. If the web hosting provider cannot find the cause of the issue, perhaps it's time to begin searching for a new provider as it's really not all that hard to find. as with any issue, it just takes a little time and the want to assist your customers.
