There's no way you can host your website on a conventional home computer and broadband connection without having a slow, unreliable forum.
The reason is that the speed at which you can download is not important - it's your upstream that matters. And on most home internet connections, this is a quarter of the downstream speed, if you are lucky. Just bite the bullet and pay for some decent hosting if you want to have a successful community, or even try one of the free hosts.

Yes, most home servers are very slow unless you pay for a very fast connection with like Ash said a high upload speed. I have great download speed at home, higher than what we pay for, but upload stinks.

To have a good server at home you need a very fast (not normal consumer) internet speed, uninteruptable power supply, sprinkler system, a lot of money.

If you did set it up on your broadband it would be very hard to get the domain to point to it because most ISPs use dynamic IPs so your site would be down for 48 hours everytime you lost your connection because your service IP would change therfor affecting the domain.

I've been meaning to ask him so I don't know how he does it but a friend of mine runs his own server just to host his personal blog. I don't know if he had to pay for a static IP address or if theres some other way of doing it but it can be done.

Yeah, some ISPs will give you a static IP if you ask but some will make you pay and some wont at all.

I contacted mine and they said it wasn't possible unless I bought their business plan.

Some ISPs make the IP addresses change every few days but some only make them change when you disconnect.

So if you had the second one and you router and server were connected to an uninteruptable power supply so it never turned off then it should change very, very rarely.

Setting up nameservers is also a hard and technical process that can get hard.

If he did manage to set up the server and nameservers etc. then another problem would be the speed of the internet connection.

On standard ADSL (at least in the UK) its 8mbps but if you test the upload speed its rarely over 400 kbps. I tested mine and only got 100 kbps but I live in the country.

This would be ok, if not slow for browsing the website(s) on the server but not for downloading files.

Anyway if you do want to get started I would advise installed Linux (Fedora Core and CentOS are good for servers) and read a few Linux/Unix books and then find a tutorial about setting up a web server.

You could also use IIS in Windows if you wanted, it might be easier for you but I don't like it.

Also another option for the IP thing would probably be a dynamic DNS server or something like Dynamic Network Services, Inc. -- DynDNS -- Welcome

I'll suggest mine
Your forum will load FAST. There are currently 3 other sites on the server, the packages are not oversold and I've got a great team for tech support and try my best to look after my clients well. Check out the packages at AshServ :: Hosting for Everyone.

If budget is an issue, let me know. You can also get the £4.99 setup fee for installation taken off with the promotional code 'FREEINSTALL'.
Alternatively, and if you don't mind moving hosts and keeping backups when the provider goes down and you don't mind ads on your site, and site speed / uptime isn't an issue, consider a free host.

Feel free to shop around for other hosts - I'll pricematch.

A Small Orange - Web Hosting, Software and more! is a good hosting company but they're not cheap. You get what you pay for though. I've recently went with them.

You could try HostGator. I think that they are a good hosting company, they are very popular, hundereds of servers, cheap.

The baby plan has 100Gb disk space, 1000Gb bandwidth, unlimited addon domains and only $10 per month, enter "JURY" as the promo code to get the first month for $0.01
