A dedicated server is when you have an entire server to yourself...The hard drive, memory, CPU, it's all yours. Dedicated servers are used for very active websites.

A VPS is a "Virtual Private Server"...That's a setup where one server is divided into a handful of different sections. Each section acts as its own server but doesn't use up the resources for the entire server. When you have a VPS, you basically own a large chunk of a server - but not the whole thing. This is for fairly active websites, but not those active enough to merit an entire server.

To put this into perspective...The "normal" hosting that you see around for like $5/month is "shared hosting". When you're on a shared server, you are typically on a server with 100+ websites.

I'm on a shared server, but with 522 other sites so that means that I'm having problems very often lately. I'm getting more traffic the last few months that seems to be a problem being on this server.

Traffic is about 2.000 hits per day and bandwidth is 10 - 15 Gb per month. Do you think that it's time for me to move or there are other things I can do to have more steady and fast web site?

I would suggest a VPS if you can afford it. I was with Servint at one time and had a good experience with them.

Yeah, I'd also suggest that you move onto a VPS...With a site that large and busy, you don't want to rely too heavily on a shared server...Where you're sharing your resources with hundreds of other websites, when really, your site alone needs a fairly large chunk of them.

I've also heard good things about Servint. You can also get very good VPS prices from 1&1. I personally don't have experience with their VPS's...I know that their shared hosting is very good, and their starting VPS prices are among the lowest I've seen.

Well, at the moment I'm with Hostony (Profi) but the thing is that this package is paid out till 2009-03-02. Yes I know now that it's no very wise thing to prepay hosting for the next 2 years, but I have now only this choice (VPSSTART) because the unused time for my current package will be sent to my account balance and then used in my future payment.

Do you think that it could be improvement in performance with VPSSTART or its worthless?

I've never heard of Hostony, but if you've already dumped a lot of money into this and cannot get a refund, then I'd most definitely recommend that you move to a VPS.

If their service ends up being very poor, then you can always move to a better VPS

I've been using Hostican VPS for about 6 months now and they have been excellent. HostICan - Web Hosting - FREE Domain, PHP, 2,500GB of bandwidth, and more... is the site... I use the VPS Extreme package and it is about $99 if you pay monthly.
