I don't want to sell the domains - .net would probably help anyway

Considering the registration fee was zero, that means your domain is worth nothing.

.ORG isn't that useless
Some people prefer .org over .net.
.COM and .ORG actually have an 'identity' online. .com is commercial, .org is usually charity/non-profit. What's .net?

But yeah, I guess .net is preferable to .org if it's available.

Reg'd fee, maybe a little more.

If you're going to make it a free forum host, are you going to give the users a different domain for their forums? ..or are the going to have http://forumsetup.org/username ? -- because I don't think that's too great.

They could add there own, and it would be a sub-domain, forumname.forumsetup.org.

They could also use, xanthom.com, xanthom-designs.co.uk , i'm going to be buying a really small domain eg name.99x.com..

And its not hard to get a .tk domain or a co.nr

Ever hear this:

"I am going to surf the NET"

I bet you have....

Ever hear this:

"I have to go surf the orgs"

I bet you haven't.

Personal preference or not you have to decide on a domain that's going to be the most attractive you can possibly obtain. .net is for "network" as ryan stated but I believe many associate it with interNET as well. dotnet has been gaining solid ground as a secondary to dotcom. It's actually always been in that position but since now so many dotcoms are taken...the dotnet space is even more attractive.

I suggest you place your personal preference for dotorg aside and concentrate on a name with higher potential. Judging by your posts you seem as though you are attempting to make money. It's easier to do that if you consider monetization in every decision you make. That includes the choosing of a name.

Urm........No.......what would that be? i'm not familiar with this, OF COURSE I HAVE!

Why does the domain have to look attractive? is a .net going to make it look more attractive? No... .org is fine, i'm not wishing to sell it either..So it doesn't matter. If people don't want a free ad less phpbb2 & smf because it has a .org extension, then don't, its not my loss. Other domains will become available for an extension.

How the domain looks is extremely important for a free host if your users are going to be given a subdomain underneath that domain. It will determine their URL.

As somebody else said, you need to put your own personal feelings aside and focus on what the general public wants - The general public wants clean domains and .coms from free hosts...If you throw your hands up in the air and say "too bad, their loss!", then you'll just lose a lot of users to other free hosts with short .com's. If that doesn't bother you, then more power to you
