I think what they meant was that .coms don't have to be only commercial use anymore. In that case I agree but if I misinterpreted forgive me.

Right, maybe so...although his next comment was:

Why exactly?

Reason is .com's were used primarily by businesses, back in the day. Making the .com domains much more important, even more popular and more worth while having. Now there is mist of confusion over the TDL that everyone thinks they are better, when infact it doesnt matter at all.

They're not "better" by any technical standards but they are much more marketable and brandable. People remember .coms much more easily than .net. You might lose traffic to the .com variant of a domain name if you don't have the .com. So they are much better for type-in traffic.

^^ Exactly

I don't care about commercial/network/non-profit.

.com's are what everybody thinks about when they think about websites and the internet. You know more about TLD's because you're a webmaster, but the vast majority of internet users know nothing about them other than the fact that most websites they go to are .coms, so naturally, that is going to be the TLD they default to when they try to remember a recent website they visited, and furthermore, when your typical internet user does stumble upon a .net or .org, flags will sometimes go up...because frankly, those TLD's are not as professional unless they serve a purpose (and that purpose is not to get a better sounding domain)

Exactly, thats why I asked.

Althyough if somebody has a .com and is doing a great website full of good content but no forums and you set up a forum in the .net about the same content, you are not technically stealing his audience but giving more options to his users. And you are getting benefits from his efforts without he noticing, without directly taking anything from him or he from you.

For my fansmack.net I chose it because the .com was taken but the .com has no content or anything. The owner wanted too much for the domain and I figured it would be money better spent on advertising the .net. Plus FanSmack.net has a better ring to it IMO but I have been saying it for several months and .com would sound funny naturally after you say .net for so long.

On an additional note, people have typed in fansmack.com in google and found my site. I wanted .com but there was no content up so I figured it wouldnt' be too hard to direct people to the .net

If there is no competition on the .com, you should be fine

Be careful though, because the more and more your .net takes off, the easier and easier it gets for the .com owner to steal traffic
