Is a .net domain that bad?

I mean, let's say you have a great name but the .com is taken and the .com site doesn't even have a forum even though it talks about the same content as you. And you want to use the same domain in .net just for a forum about the same topic of the .com site?

Is that a good or bad idea?

I always use dotnet if the dotcom is not available. Prefer it to dotorg or anything else.

If there's no site up on the .com then I don't think its that big of a deal. .coms are much easier to remember for type-in traffic but as long as you're not sending them to competitors sites then I think .net is the best alternative.

It really just depends on the situation and what domains your working with. .coms are better in almost are circumstances. If the .com is not available, that sometimes means that the .net is fine...but in other circumstances, you may also be better of just finding another domain in which you can get the .com

.net is 2nd to .com sites but still worth it if you like the name and think its worth your time and effort. Myself I will come up with 100 names for a .com site before I decide on a .net site. It's only because I don't like the idea of settling for a .net site.

When the Internet first began .Com's were mainly for commercial use only. In this day and age it doesnt matter. In my opinion it's how well the domain in question rolls off the tongue with the following .com/.net/.whatever

Regarding the fact someone else has the .com already, think of it this way. If someone else has had the same domain name idea, then your clearly onto a winner here. Plus, in 5 years time when either domain is worth a hell of a lot more, you could buy one another out. For instance, if Google decided to buy the .com domain they will most likely be coming to you for the .net. Just an example.

My advice, go for it.

I definitely disagree with that. It does matter quite a bit.

Just because a domain is already registered elsewhere does not make it a "winner"
