Server Load!!! And Bandwidth!!!!

I really do not know how to ask this question. But here it goes. Some of the forums I visit say from between 20 to 80 people have visit the forum for the day. Now I know if your talking about a 24hr peroid. Its really no load on the server.

At what point does it start to become a issue with the server? How many people does it take to start to put a load on the server? I am really intrested. Anyone here have a big forum or a forum on a dedicated server? If so can you tell me your server specs and how much bandwidth your transfering?

Thanks for your time
Soulwatcher

i have had it on a few forums im registered at before.

but i would guess it has to be alot of bandwith for it to be an issue for a server. but id guess about 700members per day. on a 800gb bandwith. it also depends if the site has downloads also.

Either Lee_D or theMusicMan should be able to give you a solid answer, since both of them have boards listed on big-boards.com.

That very much depends on the script (forum software) and the content.

Server load mostly depends on good coding plus bandwidth usage, multiplied by the number of users.

Good coding means how many instructions are needed to complete a task. A one line infinite loop can choke the server.

Bandwidth is the amount of staff the server has to serve. Pages with a lot of graphics will use more bandwidth.

For example, I have seen single pages (heavily moded forum software) that are over 400 KB of HTML data without the images. The images can be 50-500 KB.

So the server has to server this amount of data every time (subject to caching).
I have also seen forums pages that are 30-40 KB.

So having 10 users on the 30 KB page is the same as 1 user on the 300 KB page.

Mods are a major source of extra server load. Beside the fact that Mods can be written by anyone, the more things are there to be done, the more the server load.

There are many other issues like 70 users in 24 hours does no mean anything as they may all have tried to connect a the same time.

I hope that helps
