Cool Colocation and Servers

I bought a Dell 1850. I spec'ed everything out, Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz HT, 2 Gigs of RAM, Dual 146 Gig SCSI 10,000 rpm, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, etc, etc. It's in a 1u rack mount.

For a data center I searched the web over and found my best deal at www.burst.net using thier colo 2 plan I get 2000 GB a month for $109.00 bucks! I've got bandwidth out the a#$ vict:

If I was going to buy a new server today I'd go with apaq digital www.apaqdigital.com . I spend a lot of time at Web Hosting Talk, and both BurstNET and Apaq have great reputations.

Most of the servers I manage are Dual Xeons 2.8ghz or better with dual scsi drives running RHE.

Now, I could go ahead and build said servers for my customers, but the intital cost far outweighs the rental, plus renting from someone means that they replace the hardware.

So the intial cost, and overtall cost of building and colocating a server for more people is way higher than what it would take to just lease/rent one.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. Show me where I can rent a P4 3.0GHZ 2MB Cache 64BIT HT, 2GB of DDR 400 ram, two 80GB Sata 150 Western Digital Hard Drives, running hardware Raid 1 (3ware Raid card), and a 250GB Sata 150 Western Digital Backup Hard Drive, for $49.99 per month. And I will buy 2 of them. Your just not going to find a server with those specs for that price. You would be lucky to get a 2.0GHZ Celeron

It doesn't matter if the server was a dual Opteron server with 8GB of ram running Raid 5. The co-location price would still be $49.99. And you couldn't touch a dual Opteron server with 8GB of ram with Raid 5 for under $500 per month.

And lets talk about the price of the hardware. Three years ago I bought a Dell Power Edge SC600 server for $549. I put another $500 into the server to get it the way I wanted it. Then I ran the server for almost 3 years and sold it on ebay for $500. $49 less than what I payed for it 3 years ago. How much money are you going to get back out of that dedicated server when you end the contract?

Now lets talk about bandwidth, say they sell you 1,000GB per month with your server. How much of that 1,000GB per month are you going to use? Unless your running some sort of download website your not even going to come close to 1,000GB per month. My old server and website, with running my own personal teamspeak server was transferring 10GB per month. Thats a far cry from 1,000GB. They say 1,000GB per month to make it sound good. But in the real world they know your not even going to come close to that.

With co-location you only pay for what you need. And the great thing about it. Is the server is built to your own specs. My server parts were hand picked by me. I built the server to satisfy my needs. And I built it the way I wanted it. The file system, the OS, ect all specked out the way I wanted it. And if I decided tomorrow I wanted to sell my server I could probably get 80% of what I payed for it.

Honestly? You can't.

However, lets assume that you do colo, and you need way more than 200gb of bandwidth (most of the sites I'm runnin go though 500-1500GB of bandwidth a month).

The cost of building servers to acomdiate the trafic would cost upwords of 1500 dollars, not to mention my time configuring, and setting up the initial install of the OS, not to mention any license fees if I were to use one distro over another.

Ontop of this, lets say that hardware fails, perhaps my entire scsi array and drives, now I have to replace it. Cost goes up.

I'm glad colo works well for you, but it doesn't for everyone.

I just priced the servers we rent now (most of them) Each would cost me
$3,454 from dell, x 6 = 20724 for intital setup. Now, this doesn't even start to cover the bandwidth charges that I(my clients) will need to pay for. I believe all of the servers go though a total of about 4TB a month, at least to be on the safe side. Thats another 4000 a month just for colocation.

So, we have 24724 dollars just to get our first month plus setup.

In the first year we spent 68,724 on colocation fees.

Compared to 1800~ a month on retal fees, which is 21000~.

So, ontop of this, if any of my hardware fails, I am responseable for it, which means more money directly out of my clients pockets, if the reneted hardware fails, its not our problem and replaced quickly.

Sure we could sell them, but I generally don't get rid of servers.

Edit: We go though upwards for 5TB a month atm, for all of the servers.

Unless my math is way off your loss was $549, not $49 (-$549 + -$500 - +$500).

Ok, I can see your point. It would depend on your server needs. I am not running any high bandwidth websites.

For my costs Co-location: $1,000 for the server + $50 x 12 (colocation costs)= $1600 first year.

vs Dedicated a server with my specs: $180 (probbaly more) x 12 = $2160

So thats a first year savings of $560. Now lets say I run the server another year. I would save $1560 the second year, for a two year total savings of $2120. I could build a dual Operton server for the money I saved over the two years. arty:
