Alright, lets say you do that, but one of the opterons fry, and part of the harddrive goes bad as well. What do you do then? You end up paying more money out of your pocket and have downtime to boot. The DC won't replace these parts for you, and if they do/can the cost will be inflated 200-500% or so.

I also didn't mention control panels, if any, and if you are not the addtional added time to manage servers by hand.

a control panel, while many are free, most use cPanel, and personally for me its cPanel or by hand. So either buying a flatout license at 1500 for a year, or paying monthly 25-55 a month adds to the TCO of the server.

Real Highend machines are costly, Considering a Dual Opteron even hand built would be expensive, I don't see how you really save money in the long run, unless you have a very low end server.

I did loose $549 total, but if you read what I said "I payed $549 for the server from Dell. Almost three years latter I sold the server for $500. $49 less than I payed for it when it was new)

$549 = new price
$500 = is what it sold for on ebay
$49 = Less than what I payed for it bran new

But I did loose $549 total, but I also got almost 3 years of use out of the server.

If I were to resell those servers 3 years from today, I'd be lucky to get a grand for them each.

Which is 6000 dollars compared to 24000.

For a control panel I use Webmin with Virtualmin they are totaly free. They can do everything that cPanel can do plus some. www.webmin.com

And your right if something happens I am going to have to pay for it. I have had my own server for 3 years. And in that three year time I had zero breakdowns. I will admit my server dont run my server hard, but the odds of a processor, motherboard, or ram going bad are a million to 1. At the most I can see a hard drive going bad, or maybe the raid card.

Next year I am going to be building a dual operton server with 4GB of ram, with Raid 5. Not because I need it, but because I want it. And I will be happy to pay my $49.99 per month. Even if my badwidth requirements change it still will be cheaper than dedicated.

I did read what you said and it's still incorrect. If you removed the $500 of upgrades from it do you still think it would've sold for $500? The actual cost of the server was $1049, not $549.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good deal, just that you saying you got back only $49 less then what you paid for it is misleading. It'd be like saying I bought an old LeBaron 5 years ago for 5K, put a new Dodge Viper engine in it at a cost of 5K, and sold it again a few years later at 4K at a loss of only 1K. Totally inaccurate to my TCO and something my accountant would be yelling at me for.

... and I don't like when he yells, he smokes cigars.
