Picking a server

Is there any method to picking a server for your forum? For example, x amount of ram for x amount of users.

Also does anyone notice a big difference between raid 1 and raid 5, or scsi over sata?

hi

This host provide that:
http://www.getavps.com

They host on SCSI RAID 5.

SCSI mean a type of interface and hard drives that are made for this type of interface and a lot more reliable than SATA or IDE drives. SCSI is a lot faster than IDE and SATA.
Their lifetime is around 1500000 hours 24/7.

Most of hosts use standard IDE drives because they are cheap but they are not recommended for servers and are not reliable as SCSI.

SATA also is not recommended for servers except Western Digital Raptor hard drives as well as Western Digital RE series which come with 5 years of warranty and are designed for server enviroments.

RAID 1 mean that there are 2 identical drives with the same data, if one blow-up the other one will have the same data..
Many new hosting companies use SATA2 with RAID1 because of good price.
Find on google more about RAID.

SCSI & RAID 10 is the best combination as I remember.

Well said pal.I just want to add to that if youre looking for a good server make sure their uptime is atleast 99.6%.Because some of the server Im using before their server is down every other minute. And it's really disappointing on my part.

It more often depends on the datacenter its located at. Are you looking for a dedicated server or your own private server that you will "own"?

Some hosts provide public uptime stats...unfortunately not all hosts do this...I'd say that if you can't find any uptime stats for a host that you're interested in, email their support to see if they can provide you some - never trust their website which says "99.8% uptime!" - you need to see the stats for yourself, preferably third party stats
