Question Managed Site Backup Service?

Hi All,

Look for ideas / recommendations on site backup services as whilst my current host is doing their basic backups, i'm starting to be concerned that in the event of a major crash I might loose some vital data etc.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Miyagi

If you are referring to your forum database...I'd recommend this...that's what we use here at AF.

hehe, thank you - although most credit should go to Larry...he created the actual script, all I did was make it available

COOL!

hmmm...it might just be that you've given me rep recently and haven't given many others rep since then. You kind of have to "spread out" your rep instead of giving the same person rep all the time.

Backing up the database is crucial and I use a similar script. But this script does nothing but backup the database on the server. If the server crashes hard and you lose the files on the hard-drive you loose the backup database as well.

You must download that database on a local machine, seperate from the webserver. I had this happen to me thinking I was safe because I was backing up the database. I would rarely copy the backup locally, I lost 2 months of post, threads, pictures and new registrations. I was mortified.

Now I download my database to my local machine every week, and my host does incremental backups everyday of all files, and a complete backup every two weeks.

Another thing to remember is if your host is doing regular backups they don't backup your database unless it was backup by this script or similar and placed in the file structure.

Yep, you're very right, soidgas...if somebody knows of a good way to automate a local backup, I would love you forever

As of now, we back up the AF database every 6 hours, storing the 6 latest copies...but as you've said, they are stored on the server, which is not always 100% reliable either. What I tend to do is pull my own backup on my local PC every now and then when it crosses my mind, but definitely not as much as I should...I'd love to have some way to have my PC access the server automatically to download the backups

Yep I'm doing my own local backups of the database, it's very easily done with SMF. Just trying to take that extra step of caution. Co-location would be an expensive venture at this stage i'd imagine.

I'm really looking for a complete, paid solution from a 3rd party perspective for the WHOLE site, I thought the market would be flooded with online specialists in this area.
