MySQL Databases

I have heard it is possible to run more than one forum from a MySQL database, but i dont know how to incorporate them together, say if i bought a forum, how could i incorporate it into a current Database? or have i been misinformed?

Also, if possible, can it be done without Shell Access?

Are you talking about running two separate forums, or...?

If you are talking about running two separate forums off of one database, I *believe* this can be done by giving the tables for each forum their own prefix...I'm not positive this would work, but it makes sense to me. The only reason you would really need to do this, though, would be if your host only allowed you to have 1 database...if you can have more than 1, I'd recommend keeping them separate.

If you're talking about merging two databases together into one forum, that can be done also, but it depends on the software you're using.

Well im hoping to buy a forum, and my host only allows 3 databases, all full (one has my forum, one is a special designed FAQ, and the other is a exclusive gallery so the forum isnt clutterd with pictures). I was hoping if i bought another forum i could merge the two on the same database but of course run them both separtly (the forums) from different URLs)

Also, i wouldnt be able to gurantee they would both use the same software (my current is phpBB2)

Well if they are all phpbb databases then you should be able to give each forum instance it's own table prefix. The only problem with this method is that it is a security nightmare and could be a performance pitfall as you would have just effectively doubled the size of the database. Now importing the data to the database has always been a challenge with out shell access. I personally don't do it with out shell, but other folks around here have had success.

All engines should have somewhere where you can specify a database table prefix. I run two installations of phpBB, a test phpBB3, and about three homebrew PHP apps all off a single MySQL database. As long as the prefixes are different the tables will all coexist peacefully.

Yeesh! I can't even imagine how big of a mess that database must be

I'm like Larry, one program in a single database is enough for me...I couldn't imagine having 300+ tables in a single database

It is very possible and I've had several different forums and scripts running off of a database a few times. As for not recommended, it's just going to have lots of tables in it. This could be a pain if your going to be editing the database often, but otherwise you'll be fine.

Other option is to look for a host that allows more, but if your happy where you are...

It is more than that my friend. It is against about every security policy made and also tends to be a resource intensive operation. Huge database tend to be much harder on resources than several smaller databases.
