Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 182  | private vs. public I'm co-admin of a private forum and my moderators are insisting that we open the forum for public viewers. But in my opinion, the drawbacks far outweight the advantages. I'm particularly afraid of a troll invasion, not mentioning spammers. One option woud be to temporarily open the forum to see what happens. I'm wondering if any of you guys had a similar experience, or if you had a thought about private vs. public forum. Thanks  | ||||

But he changed his message and now my reply is meaningless! Going back to what you suggested, for me to deal with spam and trolls as they come means to monitor the forum like a hawk, and I'm not sure I can spend much more time on it! | ||||

Yes, of course we do...but it's nothing that destroys our forums. In fact, I think that the disadvantages of a private forum far outweigh those of a public forum. Some forums need to be private such as those with confidential information or extremely controversial topics...but I would say that unless the topic of your forum falls into this category, it should definitely be public.

Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 182 | I really appreciate your input, Ryan. It makes a lot of sense. One of my mods was telling me the story of a yahoo board that went downhill because the spammers outnumbered the posters by a large margin. I have nightmares ever since. | ||||
