Do you even need staff, starting out?

I can understand the absolute need for them later, but when you start out and have only a few hundred people, is it even necessary?

Also, how many of you pay your moderators? It seems like there are many people on every forum who want the privelige of being a mod, and you can get it done for free.

Yeah, I think that this is something many new admins never know or take into consideration. There are a few very good threads about this in here...here's a summary I made regarding this a while ago

This is completely up to you and how much you can handle. The more time and experience you have running forums, the less need there will be for staff to help out. If you have 8 hours a day to moderate your forums, you probably will not need staff until the forums become extremely active. Whereas, if you only have a half hour or so per day, you are probably going to need somebody to help you out.

So...when do you start to look for staff? Simple answer - When you find that you cannot handle all of the duties yourself, in a timely manner. If you begin to get stressed out over the abundant activity and issues in your community, find somebody to help out. Be sure to choose wisely, as staff can easily make or break a community. Pick somebody that you know and more importantly, that you trust. Admin experience is not always the most important factor when choosing staff, although it should be one. More important is somebody that knows how to make decisions and make them fairly. Also important is choosing somebody that actually wants the job. Nothing is worse than somebody who doesnt enjoy what they are doing.

Lastly, beware of "over-staffing" your forums. There is no need to have more mods than you need. First of all, because well - you don't need them! Second of all, because some mods that sit around and do nothing will get bored...but they have this cool title under their name, and some fancy new buttons available to them. If they don't have work to do, they might try to find it on their own...thus, making unwarranted decisions. This also comes back to mod selection. If you are sure to pick people that you know and trust, you will probably not run into this problem, but if you move into recruiting too quickly and recruit too many - beware of mod boredom.
Source: When Staff is Needed

That pretty much sums up my thoughts on it...and as far as paying moderators, I've never been a huge fan of this either...I feel like mods should moderate your forums because they want to, not for the money...but then again, money can also be a nice bonus which makes your mods happy...and there's nothing quite as good as happy mods

First off, great read Cadence, I agree with everything said. I believe in not paying mods, I think if you start paying mods they may think that they "run" your board instead of helping you run it.

We pay our mods, but more on a bonus style scheme. They also get free skins etc. We are a commercial site ergo everyone gets something.

Generally you need staff as you need em. If you find you spend more time moderatoring posts than actually adding content to your site then you need staff. Admins shouldn't be moderating imho as your focus is needed elsewhere, marketing, adding new content, thinking about directions etc.

We tend to go for older staff who have expierance on a lot bigger boards.

Also when appointing staff keep in mind timezones. It's not good having ten great moderators if they are all in the same timezone and your problem members come from other time zones

When appointing a new staff member equally have it on a month's trial basis, if they can't contribute, handle members, etc then you don't need them clogging up your staff forums.

I agree with this for the most part, but, I also think that for forums in a beginning stage, an active posting Admin is very important. Not necessarily for moderating purposes, but just to get the basics down. If an admin at new forums spends 90% of his/her time behind the scenes, the forums aren't going to get anywhere. As the forums begin to chug along on their own, then you get mods to fill in for you and focus more of your time behind the scenes for sure.

Ah, yes, a great point. We've only got two people on staff here at AdminFusion, but we are in different continents. For that reason, we've got about 20 hours of the 24 covered each day. That's quite a feat for two people.

Well, I've been going for almost a year now and do have moderators. I didn't really need them until quite a few months down the line, they are still optional at this point. I do a lot of the work myself still, organizing contests and moderating posts.

I have a few moderators which lighten the load quite a bit, since I get many kids plugging their websites outside of the authorized forum, which requires 30 posts.

When you get a popular forum, you will definitely need them. When you're just starting out, with few members and active posters I think its kind of optional. But as your site gains in popularty, you will get lots of people looking to promote their website or just post stupid things to make others angry.

As for paying, I don't pay my moderators. I do give them some space for their personal galleries though, and free image hosting for whatever they need.

Well, I had one other person help me because I have school. That person can help watch what users say and control behavior if it gets out of hand. I am the only administrator.

When starting I don’t think you need staff! I did try it on one of my forums but he just got in the way. When the forum is starting you want to do it your self as its your “baby” in a way. I would only start to get staff if I start to get like 2000 members.
