Knowing if there is a market

Hey guys,

First post here, I have been lurking around here for a while though.

My question: How do you know if there is an audience for a forum that you would like to start? I haven't seen any forums started in my area of interest so I am not really sure what to think. I am pretty sure that there are a lot of people that fall into this category though.

Thanks

I can guarantee you that there's an audience for almost ANY forum idea you can think of. One of the forums nominated for Forum of the Month is a Daughters in Law forum... which seems to be doing pretty well. Enough said.

Welcome by the way.

lol, thanks for the quick reply

i think i will go ahead with the idea, you do have a good point. my idea isn't as far out there are many other successful forums are.

btw, how many posts do i have to have until i can post a thread in the Buy/Sell forum because I am looking for an IPB/vB license..

related to my question, does anyone know of any good ways to find users for an untapped market? I was thinking of advertising/promoting on closely related sites where i would expect users that fit my criteria to be.

You have to find that market somehow. When I first made my site, The Nerd Council, (www.nerdcouncil.com), there weren't any nerd forums around that I knew of. So what I did was find where nerds would hang out; in technology forums or academic forums, and I posted there, leaving my signature behind.

So what you want to do is look for a place where people would most likely be interested in your niche.

Agreed. Every forum can have success, it's just that some of them you have to work harder to find your target audience. If you tell us what it's about, we can help you brainstorm ways to find these people

Use this to get an idea of how many people are searching for the kind of things your site will cover.

If it is untapped as you say then it should be easier for you to get ranked high in search engines so make sure you do your keyword research and optimize your site for them properly.
