Major problems you encountered as forum grew

Often, the growth and popularity of a forum can lead to unforeseen difficulties. As with a sprawling tree or bush, this growth continues until something comes along to stop it. For example, if a forum admin is so enthousiastic and therefore "busy" with the growth of his forum, he forgets to anticipate problems he may face in the future (such as bandwidth limits). Planning can decrease or prevent the impact of these type of situations.

What were some of the major problems you have encountered to get to where you are today with your forum?

Spammers are the worst problem. Once you get a trained staff in place you can swiftly take care of any troublemakers though.

I consider spammers to be more of an annoyance than anything else. Hasn't anyone hit a brick wall like being dumped by a host or being served legal documents threatening to shut you down...or even an unexpected competitor.

Increased cpu usage and bandwidth was my biggest problem as we grew. We had to move from 'the spare space' on another hosting account to another account because of bandwidth, then upgrade that account for more bandwidth, then advised that we had to leave their shared hosting because of cpu usage and move to a dedicated server.

Getting to know all of your members has been the biggest problem for me as we got larger and larger...busier and busier...As most of you who have been around here early on will know, I like to post...a lot...I like to chat with my members, and I try not to let any threads go unnoticed. This gets very hard to do as your forums become very active, particularly when you go away for a few days or take a break.

I need about 48 hours in a day to do everything that I would like to do

I never really had a problem with spammers on my forum, besides the odd post here and there (counting myself very lucky), but more an issue with rude and disruptive members.

Not only spammers but spambots, many years ago when my own personal phpbb was running with image verification and email verification, somehow someone obviously had setup a script or used a spambot to do a mass posting and ended up flooding the forums.

Ouch. It's absolutely amazes me at what lengths some people will go to disrupt others.

I have been running my website now for 4 months and have hit the stage when spammers have become a problem. I have anti-robot spammer precautions so I think there must be rooms of people just registering and posting in forums around the word. Doing a search for the usernames registered revealed other websites spamed with the same content.
Have had to impose rules and am putting new members on moderate for the first 15ish posts they make. But am getting good at spotting spammers and real members I let through.
