Version Number in site?

Not quite a forum, but here we go.
On a site do you think its good or bad to have the sites version number visable? (I notice a small V3.0 on AF's logo)

Here is what i am talking about, on my new site, i have this footer. (You can't view it yourself as, like the footer suggests, its in development (still in Alpha)

How's this?

Looks fine to me, too. I've always liked the version number displayed; it gives me (and the other visitors) a sense that the website has progressed and changed over time.

The only time a version number is bad is when it is on a publically available piece of software. The version number would give an attacker a starting point of what attacks to look for when attacking. Other than that version numbers are often a good thing.

I feel the same as Larry about software version numbers. In some situations, it is ok, but in others, it might be a better idea not to include them. Typically, if you are running public, open source software that is vulnerable to hacking, you probably shouldn't display the exact version number. This isn't going to protect you 100% from hacking, but it will help.

The v3.0 that you see here at AF is more or less just for fun, but I think that the members really like to see it for the reason that Chris stated - it makes them feel like the site has progressed.

So do you actually alter the AF 3.0 when changes are made, or just keep it?
My new site will use the method of X.Y.Z.L
X= Incremented when a massive change, or full re-rewrite is performed.
Y= Incremented when a change is made that will affect the users.
Z = Incremented on every code change, probably only used for maintenance / development releases
L = Letter, A or B (Alpha / Beta Release) Only used in public betas or development versions.

Sound good?

Well...we've only changed the AF version twice...First when we moved from IPB to vB and second when we introduced our new, custom skin. 1.0 to 2.0 to 3.0. We should really update it more often...such as when we introduced the front page...but again, it's just for fun and games.

BTW, CK... nobody I know uses "alpha" as a stage. They call it 'gold' or don't call it anything at all, since it's the full version.

(If you are looking for something that is released PRIOR to beta stages, then you might say 'gamma' or something else like 'beta1'.)

Noone uses alpha? I know a lot of software releases called alpha. The typical development progression is Alpha -> Beta -> Release Candidate -> Gold or RTM/RTW
