The version number would give an attacker a starting point of what attacks to look for when attacking. Other than that version numbers are often a good thing.

In some situations, it is ok, but in others, it might be a better idea not to include them. Typically, if you are running public, open source software that is vulnerable to hacking, you probably shouldn't display the exact version number. This isn't going to protect you 100% from hacking, but it will help. The v3.0 that you see here at AF is more or less just for fun, but I think that the members really like to see it for the reason that Chris stated - it makes them feel like the site has progressed.

My new site will use the method of X.Y.Z.L X= Incremented when a massive change, or full re-rewrite is performed. Y= Incremented when a change is made that will affect the users. Z = Incremented on every code change, probably only used for maintenance / development releases L = Letter, A or B (Alpha / Beta Release) Only used in public betas or development versions. Sound good?

We should really update it more often...such as when we introduced the front page...but again, it's just for fun and games.

They call it 'gold' or don't call it anything at all, since it's the full version. (If you are looking for something that is released PRIOR to beta stages, then you might say 'gamma' or something else like 'beta1'.)
