Which would be more appealing to people!

Hello,

I was thinking about a posting contest.

Which would people prefer to sign up for out of the following?

Get a prize for the first person to a certain amount of posts.

OR

Person with the highest post count in a limit gets the prize.

Any other ideas that may help?

Hmm... I've always thought that a points system is the best way to do a contest, as well as the one that benefits you the most.
For example:
1 point per post
50 points per referral [who gets above 25 points]
100 points for writing an article related to your site

Then, the people with the most points, win, and can exchange their points for prizes [e.g 10,000 points for an MP3 player]

Personally, I would rather sign up for a "first person to x posts wins" contest because it's much easier to see where I "stand" in the contest. If it's a "person with the most posts at the end of the month" contest, then it's harder for the members to know how they're doing compared to everybody else.

However, I do think that the second kind of contest (most posts made in a certain period) tends to be better for the forums because they usually generate more activity...That's just my experience

I agree with the points system methods and then then people can keep track of where they stand through the richest member function or something like that. I think that the points usually encourage people to be more involved aswell and advertise your forum for referral points.

Unless this is for the launching of a forum i think option 1 would be too biased for members with a lot of posts already. SO I say 2, unless it is a launch forum. then #1 is easier.

If nobody has any posts.

Could do another "If you have 25 posts" You can enter this contest. To be entered Post your name in this forum. If you don't have 25 posts, There is still time to get those posts in"

Or Pick somewhere on your forum that you want them to post. And for every post that is made in that section is an entry into that contest.

What is your goal? That might be easier to help you with.

Well, the second is definitely the way to go. Never place limits on contests. The thing is, you need to make sure that you get some competition. To do that, you need a good prize (don't expect people to make 100 posts for a $5 prize), and some good advertising.

Awesome idea. I would definitely go with that.

choose number two over number one, in the end you want more post in the forum. Of course, number two could backfire if you do not have many members competing right from the start. However it is better then one because there is a high chance of spam.

But my recommendation is to go with the point system, safer and more choices.

You really have to do the second one. If you do the first then EVERYONE stops participating if one person achieves the goal. With #2 everyone would still have a chance to win right up to the last minute of the contest and could keep posting. You will produce more posts with #2.
