Ideas for geek toy forum?

I registered a couple of domain names referring to a soon-to-be-released toy that's sure to become very popular among adult geeks. (And possibly kid geeks or future geeks as well, but it seems to be mostly adults buying these.) Of course I'm going to put up a forum, but what other features would be nifty or cool for a site about a toy? I'd prefer things that could be accomplished by existing mods or plugins for forum software as opposed to a separate script I'd have to integrate, but any ideas are welcome.

PM me if you feel you need the specific name of the toy. (I just didn't want to seem like I was advertising.)

Feel free to let us know exactly what toy you are referring to...I'm sure it will help us help you

Ummm....toys for geeks...let's see....an Arcade sure sounds like a good idea. Geeks like games, right? Without more details on the toy, I'm not exactly sure what else to say...Maybe you could find something that lets you modify the profile page some so that they could have an "About My Toy" page where they can have pics of it, say where they got it, how much they paid, how it is modified (assuming you can modify this toy, haha), stories with the toy...I'm not sure, let me know what it is though, I'm curious

Well since you say it's ok. The toy is Lego NXT, the successor to Lego Mindstorms. (I'm not sure if it will be sold as Lego Mindstorms NXT or just Lego NXT, but I'm hoping for just NXT as the domains don't contain the word Mindstorms.) There's a preview article from next month's Wired magazine here.

I have a couple of the old Mindstorms sets but hardly ever got enough time to sit down with them, so I can't exactly call myself an expert. And I understand Lego already has a thriving community of it's own, so I'd probably have to offer something really unique and exciting to be able to attract some power users.

I see, well, I still dont understand exactly what it is, but I'm just going to assume the concept of good ole Lego's

After knowing what the toy is, I still think that having a special "profile" page for this would be a good idea. You could let people put pictures up of their creation....and tell what they have added on to it, etc.

Mindstorm Legos are the kind that are robotic. You build stuff like regular legos but then you can program it with a computer. You can make a robotic arm in legos and then control it with a computer to pick up stuff and throw at people.

^^ Lol

Well, since it's lego, how about a page for uploading pics of the different models your members make and the programs they have. It's a kind of variation of ryan's idea.

Ah Legos, is there a better toy? Anyways I never had a mindstorm, i couldn't afford it , but I’m guessing you can save the programs for them and allow people to upload them to the corresponding projects.

I think there are at least a few mods for it online, so maybe a mod section.

Also I think a Tutorial section would be nice, where people who just got one could go to learn how to do things with it.

You could have a contest section, like every month have a new contest where people have to build something to do a task. This might be better in the forum though, I’m not sure.
