My biggest mistake was adding a forum too soon to one of my sites before it had a sufficient level of traffic to support it.

It was a painfully slow start, but it eventually worked out.

Not being consistent with my writing and activity. I own 13 forums and also have a regular job plus clients, not to mention I'd sleep too at night ...
And moving forums from one folder to another and thus killing my link backs.
