Biggest Mistake that you Regret as Admin

We've all made them, what was your biggest?

I can't think of one single mistake that stands out above all others for me, but I can think of a couple times in which I regretted not backing up the forums as religiously as I do now...Sometimes due to hacking and not having a recent backup to import, sometimes do to modifications which break the forums and not having a working copy to fall back on.

As far as other mistakes, I wouldnt necessarily consider them "mistakes", but there have been times when I have regretted the way I acted towards my community...whether it is handling problem members or providing support, but none that were major. At least, not important enough for me to remember.

What is the one mistake that you made as an admin that you regret most?

Yep, that's a very important part of making mistakes - when you make them. Everybody is bound to make mistakes, but what separates the serious mistakes from the not so serious mistakes is when you make them...if I make any, I'd prefer to make them soon and learn from them...instead of making the way down the road and them having serious consequences

haha. Yeah I'm with ryan on the back up dept. I remember on a previous project together we found ourselves looking @ the bad end of a hacking attempt. I managed to stop them before really defacing our site, but the damage was done because all the forums were gone, which meant all the posts were just orphaned. I could see them, but there was no recovering them. we went to restore from what we believed was the previous nites back up only to find that it was a month old. I was so frustrated I could have hit something. That was my by far worst moment. The other one was not getting rid of a few mods and admins and replacing them on a previous project. Oh well.. we learn right?

Probably things I've done while tired and/or stressed, like sending out a mass email without a subject line (oops!).

Our former admin actually let our main domain name expire!!! He was never really active in the forum and basically let the mods run the place. That was a big cockup.

ROTFL - That is so funny, because my first newsletter I sent out did have a subject line.

Yep, the worst mistakes are the one you make that you realize you just did half a second after you do it. Like sending a newsletter...or something I have done personally, is overwriting a file before backing it up, or overwriting a file with the wrong copy...I do that kind of stuff when I get tired.

I'll double click the file in my FTP software to upload, it'll ask me if I'm sure that I want to overwrite. I dontreally think and just say "yes, of course I'm sure". Then half a second later it hits me. NOOOOO, stop!! That's not the right file. or NOOOO!! I didn't make a backup copy of the original. The things I do late at night when I get tired...

Yep, because when I'm tired, you are typically not awake, therefore it would be a mistake for me to break anything...all of the other times, I dont consider them a mistake since I can break things and just tell you to fix them. That's no mistake, YOU are my backup plan
