I'm going to start a regional forum!

I was talking with demojames on the phone last night, and I thought about creating a local board for my geographical region.

However, I don't have the mula to get another VB license. I was thinking perhaps I could cannibalize my Heroes Lounge license (shut it down) since it isn't doing so well.

What do you guys think?

Y'see, I'm getting a little frustrated of the online community not being able to meet in person for parties, dinners, events. Ten years ago, when I ran a Bulletin Board system, we could do that, because it was local people calling in.

I'm also tired of not having a successful forum. I know it's directly related to my actions or inactions as an administrator. Perhaps knowing that the peeps would be local, it could entice me to be more excited about updating the front page, etc.

Plus, it would be cool to chat about the night life around here, cuz I need to get out more.

Okay then. That's my question... what should I do about not having $ for a new owned vb license?

I think you could ask some people on the forum to donate some money in exchange for having their links on there.

Pick a topic that interests you and go for it. It really is that simple. I don't care if there are 10,000 sites on the same topic. There's a new person born everyday with that same interest.

If you're still interested in keeping your Heroes forum going maybe you could convert it to a free software and then use the vB license to start this new forum.

You don't need a vB licence for a successfull forum!!!!!! I hate eliteist vB-ites who think that just because they've paid for something that their forums are better and that their success is only because they have a vB script. I don't give a rat's arse what script a forum's on - as long as the forum is good

vBulletin makes it easier to run a forum compared to phpBB, MyBB, SMF and whatever else you want to throw in the mix. Its more stable, more tested, more feature rich and more professional than anything else you can buy.

People don't pay for 160 dollar forum software because they like spending money. They do it because it gives them the tools to make running a forum easier. If I attempted to use any free forum software I would be hacking up code constantly.

On top of everything I just mentioned vBulletin has the largest modification community of any forum software giving you endless ways to customize your site without modifying a single line of code 95% of time.

So yea. It is the better forum software. It's why over 1100 big boards use vBulletin versus a free forum software.

I'm not saying you can buy vBulletin and be assured to have a great forum but damn it sure makes life easier for you and your users.

phpBB is just now getting attachments out of the box. Just now.

By a raise of hands who else wants to wait 4 years for the next version of their forum software?

mmkay.

Don't I know it... just cuz you have VB script, does not mean you have a sucessful forum out of the box. I am proof.

Here are my great ideas, but failed boards:

iamwi.de
avengeyourself.com
herolounge.com

The jury's still out on AdminSeek.net.

my lost forum was a success, and it was started on InvisionFree. yuck

Maybe I could sell my heroes board for a small fee (high XX to low xxx) and use that to offset a new regional board.

Anyone else have Ideas?

I don't see how vB can make running a forum easier, how easy do you need to make a 'Insert category' button. And there are forum scripts like SMF and MyBB that don't need you to alter code with their plugin architecture.

All those things make it easier in the end. The less you have to worry about with your forum software the more time you can spend on the actual community.

Except, Invision Power Board (IPB) which I've been using for the last 5+ years and is equally as professional, feature-filled, stable and of comparable high quality.
