seriously....if someone ask me whats so special about my site, at the moment, i can only tell them:

i got vb arcade, whereby members can challenge among themself / to kill times also

local movie reviews / preview and release date

and my forum is more on pre-U student base... of coz, i will give tips on that too

I get members in my forum because it is one of the few in the niche that is open to discussion about our topics in a forum environment rather than the old style list-serves that tool collectors are accustomed to . My members can start a topic and expect someone will respond quickly , rather than waiting for enough responses to gather so that the list admins feel it is enough to email out another set of posts .
My forum also does not pretend to be the ultimate authority in the field , nor does it limit discussion to one type of tool or craft . Some of the old tool sites only discuss wood-working tools , or even just one type of tool , such as planes or saws .

I guess you often have something unique to offer, and that is why you start a forum in the first place.

My forum, is one of the few quality Pakistan Music sites, which aim as being a platform for Pakistani Music discussion only. Apart from that, I write reviews of Pakistani Music albums frequently, and I am holding a lyric-writing competition too.
I think you should know your forum best, and trust in it, before others do.

When I was thinking of creating my forum, I looked at different sites to see if there was anything similar. My forum is about on-line dating and social networking. There aren't really any big sites about this subject so I went ahead and created a forum about this.
I think that giving users incentives doesn't really work. For instance, if I offered you a free e-mail address and blog and games for joining my site, but you're not interested in on-line dating or social networking, would you care? I think the subject has to be something you want to discuss to join the forum.
