Hi there, I am thinking of fetching a VIP status onto my forum to hopefully encourage more members to take part and contribute to the forum, however I am stuck on idea's as to what I can offer them that they can't get as a normal member.

I have come up with some ideas

To gain the VIP status they will either need

1000 posts around the forum or to make a donation to the forum

When they receieve the VIP status they would gain the following

A forum of their own to chat amongst theirselves

Play in the arcade without gaining so many posts per day.

But I feel I may need a little something extra rather than just those 2 and that is where I am stuck.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you could also include the standard bigger inbox, less restrictions in the signature, custom user titles, user name color change.

As far as non standard... you could give away a t-shirt (with your logo).

When I first opened my forum some of the members asked if they could contribute to the running costs and as I hadn't enabled all the features at that time I decided to let them have access to most of them. Some extra features I gave them included:

Larger PM inbox
Multiple PM's
Unique Member Title
Private calendar
Viewable on 'View Forum Leaders' page
I sometimes ask for their comments before we add a new feature to the forum
If/when staff vacancies arise we may ask them first
Competition for VIPs
Access to a private forum
Username colour change

I know those things are probably standard on most forums but I felt I needed to give them something back in return and my members are very happy with that

Just a quick note, I wouldn't do 1000 posts - makes it seem too unattainable, do something like 200 posts. You'll get more people trying to get VIP status if it's worth it. Most VIP status' aren't worth 1000posts

Or you could have the first person not on staff to reach 100 gets the VIP, then the next person must reach 200, then 300, 400, 500...etc until 1,000. There it could stop. You'll have 10 VIPs, but not all at once.

For my VIP members they get mostly stuff you would expect. Bigger avatar, custom title, colored username, private forum, more PM space, email address, etc...

Those are good reasons, I would stick with them. Tee-shirts are definitely a good idea too.

Be sure to give them a special username/group/badge/etc. It's one of the easiest and cheapest things to offer, but it's also something that forum members value a lot. They want to be recognized. They want to stand out, and they want the rest of the members to know that they are contributing in some way.

It's definitely good to do something like give away a free t-shirt to each member who hits this status, but if you can't afford that...don't fret...because members like the "status" just as much, if not more, than special gifts or privileges.
