One of our members, cobby, is selling a service which will pull content from Usenet and place it into forums in thread/post format. By content, I mean a lot of content (100,000+ posts). The idea here is to almost instantaneously flood a new forum with a lot of content for the search engines to eat up. Once they do, you have a lot of listings and should start to receive a lot of hits from search engines...The problems arise when we start to discuss duplicate content and quality of that content. None of these posts are really "original" because they are being imported, and the posts are not exactly quality since they are being artificially generated.

I have accepted the fact that this is not your traditional forum setup. It really set me back when I first saw it because it goes against everything I've always preached about forums regarding quality content, spam, etc.

Seeing all of the buzz it has created has made me want to look further into it. I want to see how this actually works and whether or not it works like cobby says it does.

It's different, to say the least, and what we've agreed to do is set up a "joint venture". We're going to create a new forum and use his method of generating content and then bringing in SE traffic from it. My main goal is to just see how it works. The reason I'm posting here is because I want to track it for you to also see how it works. I'm going to track everything from buying the domain to selling the forum.

I will track traffic and revenue for sure, but is there anything else you want me to keep track of? I will also track all members/posts (natural and unnatural). I plan on installing a referral mod to help track where new members come from.

Ive accepted the venture. This is of no cost to Ryan and we are splitting the development costs. He is buying the Vbulletin License and Domain, Fastservers.net Is Sponsoring the High Speed Hosting. I will be doing the development, seo and promotion.

What this project is going to entail is Part of the site is going to be natural part of it is going to be a nntp gateway thats marked as such. This gateway currently will be a one way gateway, If you all think this should be a two way (you post on the board in the usenet gateway section) you get your post blasted through cyberspace with a little marker, promoting the forum, then please tell us early. This helps market your forum even more because it gives you a link to millions of boards, services and newsgroup readers.

I want to show everyone the benefits of a newsgroup gateway can have on your forum for your natural posting area. In the longrun (3 months +), this will start drawing between 1,000 and 5,000 unique visitors a day from these usenet posts.

The forum will be optimized for google, and I will be doing my marketing campaign against it to bring in a good mix of link partners and strategic sponsorship.

the project will have rss activated and you will be able to take the posts with you. great marketing tool really give you a bang in user readership.

so please tell us about your opinion on one way or two way gateway and your other ideas.

We haven't decided what it will be about yet, but it will definitely be a niche forum as those tend to be the most profitable and easiest to market. If you guys have ideas/requests for the topic, let us know.

We want to get some feedback here from you first before getting our hands dirty...so we don't plan on officially starting until around the end of the week.
