How to make major changes?
Without upsetting anyone?

I really want to switch to IPB. I've been putting it off though because I'm not sure how the members will react to it. It's quite different from the SMF we're using, although I plan to use the same skin. At this point everyone seems happy with SMF. (everyone except me)

Do you guys just announce changes in software? Or do you discuss it with the members first and see what they think?

I know many people won't know about different softwares, so I'm leaning on the side of just announcing the change. But I'm also worried that if I do that some won't like it.

Argh. I want to keep everyone happy and I know that's impossible to do....

I wouldn't really think your members would have a big problem in what software your forum runs unless you were switching from a paid script to a free one, or if it was a tech-savvy community. So I say go for it! Make an announcement to let them know about it and then do it. Thats how I would handle it.

I would just announce it. There is always going to be a few that are never happy no matter what you do. Just reassure them that its more secure and has better features, that should make them happy. Good luck with this and please keep us posted on how things go

Make an announcement and put a poll with it asking if you like the idea of the change. I bet they will love the new software with more freedom and control.

Just a curious question though ... not used ipb since it turned commecial .. what made u choose it over vbullletin?

I think the user interface is much cleaner and just....nice. Personally I think it looks better than Vbulletin. I know I'm in the minority with that here, and that's fine.

I'm not buying Vbulletin and I wasn't really asking for suggestions on software.

I've been behind the scenes of an IPB board and I don't consider the ACP to be bad. Different strokes, I guess. Not everyone has to buy VB you know.
