Question How do you close a forum?

I have a forum for a company I run (youve probably guessed) and really dont have time to be updating the forums daily with threads and discussions, blogging daily and talking with clients daily. I used to run a webmaster forum on another domain so thats why i setup the forums where they where now I kind of wish I didnt have them

I dont want to sell them because that is unprofessional but i dont want to keep running them either as they seem like a bit of a strain at the moment

well if you have a huge base, then you will need to look for a friend who run a similar forum and start encouraging members to transfer to there, then close the forum.

Is the strain momentary or do you see this as a long term problem?

If you don't have a strategic business or personal reason to maintain the forums and want to shut them down then I would simply close off the forums and replace them with a statement of why you have decided to close them. Offer the members a chance to remain on PM perhaps to make contact with one another for X number of days, offer some alternative sources and don't worry too much about it. Most people will understand.

You could just take an inactive role in the forum. Find a mod or 2 if you haven't already and let them run the show. Then you can keep the forum up and you don't have to worry about creating discussions. On one forum I frequent some of the admins rarely visit, they just run the behind the scenes stuff.

You don't want to sell them...and you don't want to run them.

It sounds like you have two options - you either close them or give them away, which Toucan and Moelman have each touched on. It's hard for us to say which is the better way to go without knowing your forums and the audience, but as far as I can tell, those are your two options.

I think a better option would be to get a few loyal members to become the moderators for the forum. It will give you more time to your self and mostly more traffic to your site which could mean more clients

I agree with the moderator idea. Having an active forum is definitely an asset, that I wouldn't think about throwing away just because it gets out of your control. Forums are supposed to grow to that size.

I don't see why selling a forum is unprofessional. Some people have a business with creating a forum, making it run and then sell it. I don't sell my forums for personal reasons, but I don't see why others shouldn't do this.
