If you don't have a strategic business or personal reason to maintain the forums and want to shut them down then I would simply close off the forums and replace them with a statement of why you have decided to close them. Offer the members a chance to remain on PM perhaps to make contact with one another for X number of days, offer some alternative sources and don't worry too much about it. Most people will understand.

Find a mod or 2 if you haven't already and let them run the show. Then you can keep the forum up and you don't have to worry about creating discussions. On one forum I frequent some of the admins rarely visit, they just run the behind the scenes stuff.

It sounds like you have two options - you either close them or give them away, which Toucan and Moelman have each touched on. It's hard for us to say which is the better way to go without knowing your forums and the audience, but as far as I can tell, those are your two options.
