Hey

There is nothing worse than visiting a forum to see a whole list of empty categories.

Normally I would suggest waiting until you see a decent number of existing threads that would fit nicely into a new category. That way you can establish a new category, move these threads over and have instant content.

Members often ask for new categories but have no intention of populating them with content. If many of your members are adamant that they want a new category on a given subject, I would suggest you run it on a trial and make it clear that it has a limited amount of time (perhaps a month) to be proven as a valuable and useful addition to the forum.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to start figuring out what kind of min requirements there should be on new forums. I also intend to perform a activity audit every 3 months to see how they are doing against current forums.

This is my criterion. Or if there is a need to separate specific posts for a short amount of time... we always do a holiday forum for our Secret Santa and holiday subjects and we just opened one for the election that will disappear after Nov 2008.

Well, in my case, the members wanting it flooded my forum anyway. Other people joined in because the topics were there. So, I had to make the new forums.
