What additional characteristics do you look for in a moderator?

Other than the usual things like active on your forum, interested in the subject, and maybe some experience moderating, what additional things do you look for? If you don't particularly care about anything else, what if you wanted a moderator and 10 people met your conditions, what would give someone the edge?

If you vote other, post what the other is.

If I had the option, I would've voted for both Popular and/or Respected Member of Another Forum and No Affiliation With Other Forums [apart from a member].

You don't want them stealing your members, and they'll bring in members if they are known elsewhere.

Yeah, I went with Popular/Respected Member...Moderators need to be people persons....admins need to be people persons as well as have technical skills. Moderators must be very well liked though, as the community will see them a lot

I chose Marketing/Advertising Whiz because for a smaller site, this is what will help you get off the ground. I do agree that being popular elsewhere helps. You don't want to hire someone that's a hothead and your members then take off to some place else.

I mostly look for character, dependability, and how they interact with others.

I actually started with my cousin as a moderator, and then built on as I gained members. Now we all post so much, I know who I can work with, and is responsible and trustworthy enough to do a good job.

I also found out that those that don't want to moderate are the best moderators.

I like that a lot. It doesnt seem like it would be right, but it makes a lot of sense. Be careful with this though, as you do not want to hire any moderators who are afraid to moderate.

I think he should be a Popular and a Respected Member of Another Forum.

I do agree that a moderator should be popular and respected on another forum, but I also look to make sure he's popular and respected on my forum as well. I want to make sure that the members of my forum like the person and he's not a disliked member of the community.

Yes, I only have one that didn't want to moderate, but he does a good job and will moderate. He just didn't want to do it, because he thought it would take more time than it has.

So did you ask him to become a moderator and he said no first? What made him change his mind? I'm just curious what was the factor that made him change his opinion (if you don't mind sharing of course).
