A forum to talk about OS...

Hello,

So I started using Ubuntu and found that it is a great operating system and it we can do very good discussions about it...and at work I use Windows and people often need help with this two OS...

So I though, why not create a forum to talk specifically about operative systems...we can have a category for windows and talk about Vista, XP, Software, Best hardware, etc...another one for Linux and talk about the same topics on that OS...and another one on Mac...the possibility is endless...

As a developer i spend most of my time in front of a computer...and every computer needs a OS, and every OS user, sooner or later, will need help with something or want to talk about something they like or they don't like and why not, they want to stay informed on the latest news about the system they use AND like.

I want to have a forum fully personalized with options that make my users feel comfortable.

About the name, I was thinking Talk OS but the domain is taken (.com and .net) and I though talk-os.com...but what do you think? Which other name do you suggest?

Tell me your ideas, and if somebody wanna help, it will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

There are already alot of technical support forums, but I haven't seen one yet specifically dedicated to just operating system, so you might be onto something.
As for the name TalkOS, it sounds good, but with the main domain used, it may be worth looking for another, hypernated (-) domains I find don't do too well.

Right, I mean not only technnical support...but what about news, discussions, tips, faqs, resources just about operative systems.

Do you find .info domains hard? Because TalkOS.info is available.

I'd stay away from .info, especially for a forum.

I think a found one...what about The OS Forums?

I have some ideas like, a style for Vista Lovers when you're on the Microsoft Zone, one for Mac lovers when you're in the Apple Area and another one for Ubuntu Lovers when you are at the Linux area. That kind of things.

It'll start off as a discussion forum.
Then the normal internet public will discover it.
And use it as an alternative to paying money for tech assistance.

If you do this, you'll have to be very careful and choose if you want to be an OS discussion forum, or a tech support forum. It's quite hard to have both and keep the noobs away

Another thing to remember is that there are some fairly large forums in your niches - e.g ubuntuforums.org, neowin.net. However, it's certainly not impossible to build a forum in a popular niche, but it does give you a bit more of a challenge.

One thing you might want to try is be a mainly content - driven site, maybe a wiki or something CMS based, and have the forum in /forums/. Content is great for PPC ads and search engines, and with plenty of links to the forums, people will be drawn in to discuss what they see on your site. And eventually when the forums are large enough, they can be the main source of your content.

But it is harder to attrack people to a website's forum than to a forum alone...then I won't have a The OS Forum, I will need a The OS Site or something.

So to start a survey, will you participate in a forum to talk about your preferred SO, to find tips and tricks, tutorials and articles and news about your preferred SO. Be it Mac, Windows or Linux?

Do you think you have at least a possibility to find a topic there you may like and participate?
