Hosting that does it all?

Hi there

just posted my "new person here" post and have been reading as much as i can here

i was looking at phpbb software for my forum. that being said are there hosting companies and places that also have SQL servers or whatever i need to set up my forum? or is the best route to get your own server, internet connection etc?

i would rather not do that until i see how it goes, if ever?

is there a step by step somewhere on how to host your forum and how to set it up?

sorry to be so new and clueless

thanks for any help

Hello there,
first off welcome!
Almost all hosting companys's provide what is called a MYSQL database. Just make sure that you get a Linux hosting service - do not get a microsoft one. For instance - the current plan i have is for $5 a month, and has unlimited MYSQL databases, etc... it is very simple to install! simply upload the files from PHPBB to your webspace, make the MYSQL database, and go to where you put your PHPBB files - and there will be a wizard which will walk you through it.

Hey Jacob

thanks very much for the help. i registered my domain name at godaddy. i am totally new at this and alot of it still doesn't make a lot of sense. i downloaded the phpbb v3 software to my pc but i don't have mysql on it (was going to try and practice this)

that being said, is godaddy a good place to buy hosting (I don't hink i purchased any hosting with them, just parked it for now)? and will they support phpbb and mysql etc?

would they be all i needed to actually set up my forum, host it and be secure etc?

thanks very much

as an update, and not to bother you. i went to godaddy and they have linux hosting with mysql etc and i can get that for 2 years for about 80 bucks. that being said is godaddy a good place to do all this under since i registered the domain there and its parked there?

don't want to buy that and find out i should have done something different

and why linux? will that be difficult for me to work with since i have never worked with linux beofre or is that invisible to me and just the DB platform?

thanks again

Hello there,
You would have to go with Linux, because linux has MYSQL databases, and Microsoft does not. I actually dont think that PHPBB3 would work on a Microsoft server. And yes, It will not be difficult for you, it will basically be invisible to you, unless you decide to do some advanced programming (REALLY avcanded)
Godaddy is very good - and is quite reliable and has great support, while I would love to reffer you to the people i use (i think they give more bang for the buck) we are not aloud to reffer people here... (

Yeah. I have heard quite alot of things about Go-Daddy Hosting. It appears it's good for domains, crap for hosting.

If you decide to switch providers, try AshServ :: Hosting for Everyone, I use it, very reliable and a very friendly owner
