Lightbulb How big forums survive ...

Hello everyone,

I have seen many big boards having difficult time to survive because of the source of money to pay for server (one of my friend forums is). Money that they earn from advertising banner is not enough. They're also calling member for donating to maintain the forum.

When we start building a forum, we're a small board. We want many people to come to contribute the site. We want our boards to be big. But when they're big, we have hard time to maintain them.

So, what should we do? Should we put time to make it bigger and bigger?

I agree, you adjust to it each time you grow that little bit more, it's only when you make the big leaps (from shared hosting to VPS) you start to notice a difference.

Ofcouse, I'm talking about vps or higher, not share hosting package. My friend forum is a big board. He's having hard time to keep the forum alive because of the source of money. He's paying over $150 usd/month for server. Money from advertising is not enough or he can not afford the rest. He has been facing the decision to close the board many times. I also see this problem from another big board too.

So, Should we try to develop to be a big board?

It shouldn't be hard to make 150 dollars a month on a site that needs to be on a VPS.

I imagine that this mystery site must have massive traffic to warrant needing that much in server. If that is the case then I agree with the others here and wonder if it is not monitorized correctly and is not taking advantage of the potential income it should be realizing for a site with the traffic it has.

Here is the site:

Code:
www.bacbaphi.com.vn
(my friend site)

The site is in Vietnamese language

or
Code:
http://tehparadox.com/forum/
This site is in English language. They set their donation goal is $400 to keep the site alive.

These two site are general discussion, and These two site have the same problem (money) to keep the site alive. They both have ad advertising, but they both have hard time for money to maintain. In the short run, they may be able to run the site, but in the long run, they can not.

So, how we solve this problem?
