Where to start?

Hey, Me and a firend want to start a football/soccer site but were both amateurs to site making!

We Know we want IPB or Vbulletin for our forums and we want a mainsite to post up news etc! We dont really have a clue on who to use as a website host, We need a domain, and seo!

We dont want to spend alot tho

It really depends on what you mean as a lot. It may be best to start out on a free forum and when some income passes through use that to move to a higher end forum unless you have that money up front. Just depends on your budget. Personally I use godaddy for domains and hostgator for hosting and have never had an issue with either but I'd just search in the hosting section of the site to see what would work best for you.

After that I would sit down with a notepad and sketch out your forum with the basic look/layout and forum sections then get a theme that matches that or something closest to that and tweak it to make it fit what you want.

You have mentioned 2 problems - hosting and SEO. Even though there are some companies offering both services these are basically 2 different services. If you will find reliable web hosting company it doesn't mean they will be good at SEO as well.

When you will look for some web hosting services make sure that the host offers PHP support and MySQL database. This is necessary to run the forum. The hosting costs can be anywhere between $0 and $XXX. I recommend to search for reviews at specialized hosting forums.

As mentioned, it really depends what your budget is. Buying vBulletin or IPB alone, will cost a relatively large amount of money. As for hosting and domains, you can find plenty of hosts that provide a free domain in their package. Again, it is worth having a look around to find a package that best suits your budget. I, personally, am hosted with DreamHost, and they have some great plans.

As for SEO, let me assume you install vBulletin. Now, you can buy the big plugin known as vbSEO, that this forum uses. It does cost a fair bit, but the results are good. On the other hand, there are plenty of free plugins that are available that can produce similar results.

It would be worth having a look around before you invest into anything.

Don't spend over 100 bucks for forum software not even worth near that much, all the same features can be got for free using MyBB at MyBB - Free PHP and MySQL Forum Software
