online communities for people building their own houses idea

There's a fellow on Ask Metafilter asking about online communities for people building their own houses; just thought somebody might want to pounce on this idea.

I enjoy what I'm doing and am making great progress, but I find that I'm overwhelmingly turning to my carpentry books and obscure manufacturing pages for simple advice. In a pinch I can sometimes turn to Usenet but it seems that the Internet is kind of an industrial wasteland for the DIYer who's tackling anything more than a deck. I feel very much that I'm on my own. Are there any resources I'm missing?

I wish I was handy enough to even start a forum like that. I only have the real estate license, can't build real estate though.

If it doesn't have 100+ buttons I'm no good with it, lol

Interesting idea though if you could find a few DIY'ers to post on it regular for you.

There are many more that what they have listed. I have done alot of research so most of my topics don't "overlap". It is a great niche, but like Bob states, if someone isn't doing a large remodel or ground-up how many times are they going to post.

Also the one thing is that there is different laws and requirements, so what maybe be okay in Seattle will be different than a project in Boston.

You're right in that it would probably be best to be a city or state centric board; I think a lot of people who build websites like we do tend to think a wider focus is better, when sometimes it would only lead to confusion. That's why several of the sites I'm working on are focused on New York City only (a site for people with disabilities living in New York City, wedding planning in New York City, etc.). And if I knew anything about building my own house here or knew anyone who did I would jump on the idea myself, but I'll stick to what I know
